Nail Clippers Buying Guide

When the majority of people think about nail clippers, they think of the ones that can be found in their local pharmacy or grocery store. And although those types of clippers do a fairly good job at cutting fingernails, they aren’t the only ones available. In fact, there are four different types of clippers currently manufactured nowadays and knowing a little bit about these clippers will ensure that you’re able to buy the best one possible for you.

Types of Nail Clippers

Modern nail clippers come in four different designs: Guillotine, lever, nippers, and scissor types. Each of these types of clippers has their own characteristics which make them suitable for certain nail trimming activities. Let’s take a look at each type and examine some of these nail trimmers primary characteristics.

  • Lever-Type: These are the types most often found in drug stores and grocery stores. They have narrow heads that feature narrow openings. They are designed to be a general purpose nail trimmer that can deal with not only snipping most nails but also can remove dirt underneath the nail thanks to an extendable “pick.”
  • Nail Nippers: These don’t actually look like nail trimmers but actually look more like a pair of pliers. And that’s because they are designed to cut through thicker nails or nails that grow in weird configurations.
  • Guillotine-Type: Originally, these type of clippers were used to trim dog’s nails, but they have since been adapted to human use. They are easy-to-use, have incredibly sharp edges and are pretty portable.
  • Scissor-Type: Although these type of clippers are part of most manicure sets, they aren’t used on nails much. They’re mainly used to deal with ingrown nails and not fully developed nails.

Fingernail Clippers or Toenail Clippers?

Another thing that needs to be considered is whether the trimmers are used for the fingernails or for the toenails. Although many people use the same type of clippers for both their hands and their feet, the truth of the matter is that fingernails need a different type of clippers than toenails, so it’s important to not only keep fingernail clippers on hand but also toenail clippers as well, too.

Nail Clipper Construction

Anyone intending on buying a clipper should buy one that’s at least made with stainless-steel. That’s stainless-steel clippers tend to be the longest lasting clippers available and almost always have sharp heads that can trim just about any nail. Some manufacturers coat the stainless-steel with nickel for added protection, but that’s not really necessary because stainless-steel is already the best material for these tools.

Swing Out Nail Cleaner & File

Many fingernail trimmers also have a little blade that swings out that can be used to remove dirt from underneath fingernails and sometimes has a file on it for rounding off the corners of the nails. Although this feature is pretty prevalent on trimmers made for fingernails, they are less common on toenail clippers.

Properly Caring For Nail Trimmers

While most people keep their house pretty clean, the one thing they often fail to clean is their fingernail clippers. Unfortunately, not cleaning your clippers is simply a recipe for disaster. Dirty clippers can transmit a variety of infections, especially if they are used on multiple people. Some of these conditions include onychomycosis, a serious fungal infection of the nails. Therefore, it’s extremely important to keep your clippers as clean as possible. With that goal in mind, we’ve included some tips to help you keep your clippers clean and help you prevent spreading nasty bacterial or fungal diseases.

Items Needed:

  • 2 Glass Bowls
  • 1 New Toothbrush
  • Antibacterial Soap
  • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Clean Microfiber Cloth

Step One: Wash your hands thoroughly and then fill the first glass bowl with clean water. Dip the new toothbrush into the clean water and then rub antibacterial soap on his brushes.

Step Two: Scrub the nail clippers thoroughly, making sure to get the heads, the file, and the handle thoroughly. Once that’s been done, rinse the clipper in the bowl of water.

Step Three: Place the isopropyl alcohol in the second glass bowl and add the clippers. Make sure that the Clippers are completely submerged. Leave the clippers in the alcohol for 5-minutes.

Step Four: Wash your hands again and remove the clippers from the alcohol. Dry off with the microfiber cloth and then place the clippers in a location that’s completely clean and dry.
