A Guide To Buying The Best 17-Inch Laptop

17-inch laptops are extremely useful computers that are useful alternatives to desktops and give the user the screen real-estate they need for design, gaming, or just about anything else they would need a large display to do. Unfortunately, the larger display can make these laptops less portable than their 15-inch counterparts, but that’s a trade-off that many people are willing to make.

Since 17-inch laptops are increasingly popular nowadays, and there are plenty of both good and bad models available, we’ve decided to write a guide on how to buy the best one possible. A computer that has the features a person needs and performs in the way that they would expect it to perform. In other words, this is a guide that should help most of our readers buy the best 17-inch laptop available.

Choose The Right Display

Since the main advantage of buying a 17-inch laptop is the display, the consumer should probably start their laptop search by thinking about its display. Although there are several different varieties of screens for 17-inch laptops, the ones that offer the best color and contrast are either IPS (In-Plane Switching) or IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) screens. Artists might want to choose a touch-screen display for doing their art, although some artists prefer just to buy a separate touchpad graphics tablet for that purpose. In most cases, gamers,  and office professionals who are using the laptop as a replacement for the workstation are probably going to want to avoid touchscreen displays in most cases.

Gamers are going to want to go for either a 1080 HD resolution or a 4K resolution. However, it should be said that gaming at 4K requires a top of the line graphics processor that can handle that resolution. Most of the laptops in the 17-inch range have a refresh rate of 60Hz, and that’s an acceptable refresh rate for most people. For gamers who are purchasing a laptop with high-end graphics, then they’re going to want to make sure that they choose one of the gaming laptops available that have refresh rates over 120Hz.

Choose The Right “Guts”

Once the display has been sorted, it’s time for the consumer to think about the “guts” of the machine. You know, the important parts of the laptop that actually delivers the performance a person needs. This includes the CPU, Memory, and Storage systems.

Writing about the CPU can be a difficult proposition because technology changes so rapidly, but at the moment, the most popular option for 17-inch gaming laptops is the i7. The consumer just needs to choose from the i7 8000s, 9000s, or 10000s series. The Intel Core i9 chips are extremely powerful, but they’re also extremely expensive.  At the time that we wrote this guide, the Core i10 chips were fairly new, so they weren’t readily available yet. AMD Ryzen 5 and 7 chips cost less than Intel Core chips, but they’re not as popular at this time for gamers.

The Memory

Most consumers are going to want to buy a laptop with 8Gb of non-ECC RAM. That amount and type of memory will serve most consumers well. For gamers, they are probably going to want to go with 16GB of RAM for the best results. Consumers who are using the laptop as a workstation, then they’re probably going to want to have 16Gb of RAM as their minimum, with some professionals purchasing 17-inch Laptops with 32Gb of RAM.

The Hard Drive

As far as selecting a hard drive for their laptop, most people are probably going to want solid-state drives (SSD) to house their operating system. That will give the user a faster start-up time. However, if they need additional storage space for Apps or games, then they might want to choose a laptop with a secondary 2.5-inch hard drive—which has more capacity than SSD drives but is slower. How big of a hard drive does a person need? In this day and age, we would say that 500 Gb is the minimum, but over 1-Terrabytes is usually the standard. For workstations, it’s not uncommon to see a hard drive capacity of over 3Tb.

The Graphics Card

It can be difficult for a guide to keep up with the changes in the graphics card or to stay relevant, so we won’t delve too deeply into some of the graphics options that users can consider. Graphics chips such as the RTX 2060 are capable of HD and 4K resolutions, while lower-end chips can only handle HD resolutions. Of course, the better the graphics card, the more it’s going to raise the price of the laptop.
